MUD WTR is a coffee infused coffee drink, and drinking it every day will undoubtedly deliver some of the benefits listed on the bottle. Each serving provides a large dose (although we don’t know how much exactly) of all of the most important medicinal mushrooms. Together, they can improve immune system function, cognitive performance, and energy levels. However, there’s a problem with MUD WTR. MIxing these mushrooms with boiling water is likely to destroy some of the active compounds that make these mushrooms beneficial in the first place, just like how cooking vegetables at very high temperatures destroys many micronutrients. We recommend using a comprehensive mushroom powder or capsule instead.

What is MUD WTR?
MUD WTR (also known as MUD\WTR, mudwtr and MUD Water) is not your usual cup of coffee. It’s a collection of mushroom powders and spices which much less caffeine of coffee. It’s aim is to be an alternative to the typical morning ritual of coffee.
Mud Water is claimed to promote:

- Memory
- Antioxidant Support
- Immune Function
- Calmness
- Alertness
And apparently all you need to do for these benefits is to add a tablespoon of powder to hot water. You can even add milk (including coconut milk, oat milk and various other plant milk) or creamer for a latte effect – or even MCT oil for those keto benefits.
MUD WTR even do their own creamer made from coconut milk and MCT oil. However you do not need their creamer to get the full experience. Your own creamer would probably be fine.
One of the main pulls of this alternative is that it a seventh of the caffeine you would get in your regular cups of coffee. Having this as your morning coffee may help you be more focused and less jittery with no artificial flavor.
But how accurate is all this?
In this review, we put this mud coffee to the test to see just how well it can stand up to the real thing when it comes to raising your energy level, focus and generally being a morning cup of coffee.
Is MUDWTR FDA Approved?
MUD WTR is not FDA approved, but you’ll be hard pressed to find any dietary supplement, or powdered food like this that is.
The FDA do not approve products that are classed as dietary supplements, as no prescription is required. With that lack of potency, they do not fall under the FDA’s remit, and by extension can’t be put forward for approval.
If Mud Water was an actual drug that required a prescription, or contained ingredients that did – then it would be a different story. However, MUDWTR is purely a dietary supplement / coffee alternative consisting of mushrooms and spices. Which means it does not warrant any approval from the FDA to be sold on the market.
MUDWTR Ingredients: What’s in these Mushroom Coffees?
MUDWTR has the following list of ingredients:

These are all organic ingredients in the Mud powder – and there’s a big blend of ingredients here: a spice blend and a mushroom blend.
Unfortunately, all being part of blends, we don’t know the exact dosages of any of the organic ingredients in this mud coffee. It’s all part of a proprietary powder blend. This is when a manufacturer chooses to not disclose the actual dosages of the ingredients used.
The issue with this is that you don’t know how much of each ingredient you’re getting – so you can’t work out how effective it will actually be overall. Not a great sign.
Below, we’ll take the time to go over the main ingredients in MUD WTR, and if this Mud Coffee really is the best thing to put in hot water.
Masala Chai
Masala Chai (also known as “tea masala”) is a combination of crushed ginger, crushed cardamom, cloves, lemon grass and cinnamon. This mixture is brought to a boil and then loose black tea is added.
MUD WTR claims their Masal Chai contains black tea, ginger, cardamom, nutmeg, black pepper, cinnamon and cloves – giving it a more complex flavor profile.
In MUD WTR this can help deliver you a very mild shot of caffeine to get your day started – compared to what you would get with normal coffee. This can help give you a natural energy boost, without taking you to an area of discomfort.
This ingredient is mainly for giving that bold flavor and raising your energy level. It also shows that there’s no actual coffee in MUD WTR – it’s mainly tea and spice based.
Cacao
Cacao is a component of Mud Water Coffee which is typically found in dark chocolate – and not to be confused with Cocoa Powder. It contains two main components: Theobromine and Tryptophan.
Theobromine is thought to help support cognition, improve sleep quality, lower blood pressure and even in some cases enhance lung function.
We would count a lot of these as a broad health claim, a lot of this information has not been proven in human study to ensure this. On top of that – what we do know is that Theobromine has the potential to cause an increase in heart rate as well as risk nausea.
Tryptophan on the other hand, is much more friendly, more effective for your health and one of the better options found in dark chocolate.
After being supplemented, dark chocolate’s Tryptophan can be used as a precursor to create serotonin – the feel good hormone, which can help lift your mood and mental health.
This is also one of the reasons why people say dark chocolate helps makes you feel good.
That said, although there are some “pros” to cacao in MUD WTR, you have to accept that there also some “cons” in this substitute for coffee which may cause side effects for some people.
Reishi Mushrooms
Reishi Mushroms (Ganoderma Lucidum) is a type of mushroom which as links as an immune system regulator and stress reducer. It is commonly used in Chinese Medicine and is referred to as the King of Mushroom.
However, although it sounds like a great choice in theory – the actual health benefits from Reishi Mushrooms only come from when you’re using them in large doses.
Reishi Mushroom has been seen to carry the most effect in doses of 5200 mg a day over three servigns of 1800 mg.
This is nowhere near the amount that is in a serving of MUD WTR.
Chaga Mushroom
Chaga Mushroom on the other hand is more to do with immune support and fighting inflammation and often grows on birch trees. Chaga is more widely used in Easter Culture.
In a study of mice, Chaga Mushroom had anti-inflammatory properties helping with gut damage and inhibiting inflammatory cytokines.
It’s also been seen in some cases to help boost immunity, lower blood sugar and reduce cholesterol.
However, there not a lot of studies out there to confirm this. A lot more research is needed into Chaga Mushroom extract before it can be confirmed for these numerous health benefit angles.
Cordyceps Mushroom
Cordyceps mushroom is believed to work as an anti-aging nutrient with pro-vitality properties and was used by high altitude Tibetan Herdsman. However, these broad health claims have not been seen in official human studies.
In the studies that seemed promising for Cordyceps – dosages of 1000 – 3000 mg were used. Again, like many of the other ingredients in MUD WTR – this is far more than what the product actually contains per serving.
You’re unlikely to get the full health benefits from what’s in MUD WTR.
Lion’s Mane Mushrooms
Lion’s mane mushroom is a quality ingredient for mental performance in MUD WTR – but again, it’s a nutrient which requires a high dosage.
When it’s perfectly dosed, Lion’s Mane can help produce significant cognitive boosts in mental activity. This has been seen in studies in adults aged 50 – 80. It also helped mood balance.
Lion’s Mane Mushroom can also help stimulate Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) in your brain which can support brain plasticity for learning and new memories as well as helping brain cell replication and membrane function.
However, it’s not going to have that much of an effect in MUD WTR if we don’t know how high the actual dosage is.
Turmeric
Organic Turmeric is another addition to this Mud Latte. It’s one of the more popular ingredients people use when it comes to joint health.
Why?
Because there’s a flavonoid in Turmeric known as Curcumin which has a strong anti-inflammatory property. This soothing property can help manage pain in your joints and bones.
However, it is particularly hard for our bodies to absorb. Currently there are enhanced versions of Turmeric which helps make this process easier such as CurcuWIN. However, they are not present in this blend.
On top of that the dosage will not be high enough to make a significant difference due to the proprietary blend.
Aside from this, it should still give MUD WTR some color and add some earthy flavor.
Sea Salt (Himalayan Salt)
Although on the bottle, MUD WTR claim that they use sea salt, closer inspection reveals that this in fact Himalayan Pink Salt.
If anything this is better. Himalayan Pink Salt can help with both mental and athletic performance. How does it give you this health benefit?
Because the high sodium in Himalayan Salt can help restore electrolytes. This helps a lot particularly if you’re fasting – as many of the people who use MUD WTR claim to practice intermittent fasting and / or the Keto diet.

Cinnamon
Cinnamon in here is mainly for the flavor. However it does have some mild antioxidant benefits.
It’s a natural sweetener to the flavor of Mud Coffee and should be able to help keep you away from those creeping sugar cravings. Much better than Cinnamon than something aggressively sweet upset your blood sugar level.
MUDWTR Side Effects: Is MUD\WTR safe to use for Health?
MUD\WTR should be safe to use for most people, and is unlikely to cause side effects. However, those who are particularly sensitive to it may experience and increase in heart rate and nausea from the theobromine in the cacao.
Aside from that, a lot of the ingredients in this smooth latte should be relatively safe to use. However, if you are concerned about MUD WTR side effects, you should speak to your doctor before using it.

The amount they got in the 30 servings pack. Originally, the user dediced to buy the 15 servings pack and got through the jar pretty quickly.
They shortly after ordered the 30 servings jar as they were such a frequent user. However, when the product arrived, they claim the jar was only 20% taller than the 15 serving option at the same diameter – and filled to a similar level as the 15 serving jar.
Did Reddit have anything else to say about MUD WTR?
Yes, the Redditor’s MUD WTR review claimed the product tasted like chai tea with Cinnamon Toast Crunch – however, if they drank more than two servings at a time they became quite anxious and agitated.

MUD WTR may help to some extent with mental capacity and energy, however, with the dosages being unclear and MUD WTR not fully leaning into being a supplement – it’s unlikely that there’s a clinically effective dose in here.

MUDWTR Sludge: What to do about it?
MUD\WTR, unlike your regular morning coffee per day, is known for making a sludge at the bottom of your cup. This is MUD WTR sludge. The sludge is claimed to be the abundant ingredient in this drink cacao, and it is not water-soluble.
So, what can you do about the sludge?
MUD WTR recommend that you can use a milk frother to displace the cacao which you can either sip or reuse. They strongly suggest reusing the cacao for the antioxidant properties and the high magnesium content.
Whether this appeals to you or not however, is a different story. It’s definitely not a problem you face with regular coffee.
MUDWTR While Pregnant: Can you drink this Coffee Alternative?
MUD WTR is not recommended to be consumed while pregnant. If you are pregnant you should not consider consuming MUD WTR.
The MUD WTR websites recommends that if you are pregnant you should speak to your doctor / physician before making any changes to your diet – especially one that involves a form of coffee.
MUDWTR Review Summary: Is this Mushroom Medicine worth it?
MUD WTR, Mud Coffee, Coffee Mud, Mushroom Coffee – whatever you want to call it – should only be viewed as such, as a coffee.
When it comes to the health benefits that MUD Water are touting for this product (like a boost in focus, mental clarity, energy etc) we feel like it under-delivers.
Although there is some backing for the ingredients in this mushroom coffee – it’s the dosages that let it down. You don’t know how much of each ingredient you’re getting – so how can you know how effective this “future of food” is really going to be?
Ideally, each single serving should be listed on the pack with a dosage for each of the ingredients for every individual serving.
Dosages for each of the different kinds of mushroom as well as spices would go a long way in MUD WTR.
